The Internet has had a great influence on our lives in recent years. Today, communication is easier than ever before. Thanks to steadily rising connectivity, time and distances are bridged and replaced by technological innovations such as mobile end-user devices or landline communication. Modern technology has changed the way we communicate with the rest of the world, but it also improves communication between or with machines.
Machine-to-machine communication (M2M) is the automated transfer of data between machines, devices, sensors and central servers aimed at operating and monitoring them remotely – with or without human interaction. Thanks to the availability of affordable technology and the increasing omnipresence of associated services, billions of devices will be connected over the Internet in the course of the next decade. M2M has a relevant growth potential: M2M applications are expected to grow by 23 % annually until 2020*. The intelligent interlinking of machines also yields positive effects in terms of energy and traffic efficiency, climate protection and carbon footprints as well as traffic safety.

Providing impetus for innovation in its markets and making those innovations available to a wider audience is one of the Telekom Austria Group's general objectives. In order to implement its plans, the Group promotes and supports entrepreneurs and start-ups on its markets.
Thus, Austrian A1, for instance, in addition to A1 expert know-how, has been providing start-ups with a roof over their heads and modern ICT infrastructure at the A1 Start Up Campus since 2015. In the coming years, this commitment is supposed to be expanded in the Group’s other subsidiaries, too.
