"How is Society Possible?" An Inventory of Social Concepts from Mass Society to the Knowledge Society.

Social concepts such as "mass society", "media society" or "knowledge society" are answers to the basic question of all social sciences posed by the Swiss sociologist Georg Simmel in 1908: "How is Society Possible?" These concepts represent offers for society to diagnose itself and compete for the sovereignty of interpretation. What offers are of particular relevance for the current self-image of our societies? How have they developed? What meaning and what value for self-image do they have? The diversity of competing concepts is an expression of the plural self-image of society; each accentuates another facet of modernity.
