From the Trip on Darwins "Beagle" to "Sorcerer II": The Co-Evolution of Science and Society
- March 15, 2010, 6:15 p.m.
- Helga Nowotny: Vice President, European Research Council, Brussels
Is a science entrepreneur like Craig Venter, "decoder" of the human genome, the new representative of a knowledge society in which scientific curiosity and commercial exploitation join forces? Has perhaps a "democratization" of knowledge production set in or can further conflict-laden arguments about knowledge, scientific interests and morals be expected? The lecture will show that knowledge production is always the result of our social practices and mindsets, in the same way as society is formed by our knowledge (co-production); thus a co-evolutionary development of knowledge and society takes place.
Presenter: Herbert Matis, ÖAW, Vienna University of Economics
