Telekom Austria Group Will Invest EUR 1.15 Billion in Austria over the Next 4 Years

Today Telekom Austria Fixed Net offers coverage with broadband Internet for 98% of Austrian households. 2009 saw the start of the complete redesign of the technical infrastructure. During the first phase, fiber optic broadband access lines with a speed of up to 1 Gbit/s will be provided to 150,000 residential and commercial users within the framework of pilot projects. In rural areas more than 750,000 households and businesses will be supplied with high-speed broadband with up to 30 Mbit/s as part of Telekom Austria Fixed Net’s efforts to respond to the special situation outside urban areas.

All 2.3 million customers will then be gradually connected to a modern All-IP service platform. This represents a technological advance over the existing telephone system and allows completely new communications services and convergent services such as Unified Communication or Voice-over-IP. Telekom Austria Fixed Net was one of the first operators in Europe to implement this advanced development.

In December 2008 mobilkom austria started equipping Austria’s best mobile communications network for the next increase in speed when it commenced implementation of HSPA+. This will permit peak data transmission speeds of over 28.8 Mbit/s. In March 2009 mobilkom austria became the first operator in Europe to launch a commercial HSPA+ network. The data turbo will ensure that more customers can enjoy high average speeds simultaneously, especially in traffic-intensive areas.

In January 2009 more than 10 terabytes of data were transferred through the network of mobilkom austria on a single day for the first time ever – the equivalent of a data volume of 3.5 million MP3 files or 30 million average websites. With rising usage customer demands are also increasing. mobilkom austria is therefore continuously working on developing its network: During the course of 2009 UMTS/HS/HSUPA coverage will be extended until it reaches 90% of all Austrians. Parallel to this, new technologies will be introduced in areas with rising volumes of data traffic.

Ideas secure the future

With the new Internet the Telekom Austria Group is also creating new forms of teleworking, further education, shopping from home and quicker access to the medical system – in addition to many other innovative applications that we can't even begin to imagine today.
