In February 2001, mobilkom austria acquired majority ownership of the company, which began operating in March 1999 as Slovenia's first private mobile service provider. Since May 2006, mobilkom austria has held a 100 percent interest in Si.mobil.
In Slovenia mobile penetration at year-end 2008 was 102.7%.
Besides Si.mobil, the Slovenian mobile communications market has two other mobile communications providers and two service providers. Since the end of 2007 an additional network operator has held a UMTS license.
With a market share of 27.7%, Si.mobil is the second largest mobile communications provider in the country. The growth in Si.mobil's customer base saw 570,600 customers at year-end 2008, which was a rise of 14.7% compared to the previous year.
Si.mobile's revenues rose by 11.3% to EUR 189.5 million.
