Mobile Communications

The mobile communications segment comprises all activities in the mobile communications field.

The Telekom Austria Group provides switched voice telephony in the mobile communications segment as well as VAS such as voicemail, information- and entertainment services on the mobile portal Vodafone live!, m-commerce, mobile Internet access, mobile office solutions, telematics (a combination of location-based services, global-positioning system (GPS) localization and remote control), and the use of up to three mobile phones under the same number, SMS and multimedia messaging services (MMS and video telephony) for private and business customers.

The mobile communication segment is represented by mobilkom austria in Austria, Mobiltel in Bulgaria, Vipnet in Croatia, Si.mobil in Slovenia, mobilkom liechtenstein, Velcom in Belarus, Vip mobile in Serbia and Vip operator in Macedonia.

Developments 2008

  • Subscriber Growth of 15.2 % to 17.8 million Customers
  • Strong impulses from the subsidiaries in the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia, the Belarusian operator Velcom made the biggest contribution to growth with 639,200 new subscribers
  • Expansion increased revenues by 11.7 % to 3,390.9 million EUR
  • International companies contribute 51.4% of the segment revenues
  • Increase in the EBITDA margin from 38.8% to 39.5%

Revenues in the Mobile Communication segment rose by 11.7% to EUR 3,390.9 million during 2008. This growth was driven by positive
business development in Austria and the first full-year contribution of Velcom in Belarus, Vip mobile in the Republic of Serbia and Vip operator in the Republic of Macedonia. The success of the Mobile Communication segment in all areas that offered business opportunities in 2008 cushioned losses stemming from regulatory measures.

EBITDA marge increased from 38.8% to 39.5%. Despite a 20.6% rise
in depreciation and amortization expenses, operating income
increased by 8.1% to EUR 689.3 million.
